Penang Food Hunt: ChinaHouse Not Worth The Hype

Day 2 in Penang was quite relaxing as we covered up most of the places in our itinerary on the first day itself. So we took our time to wake up in the morning and got ready for food hunt round two!

Breakfast was at Roti Canai Transfer Road, where they are famous for their beef curry. But we got their chicken curry instead due to some miscommunication....and it was tasteless.

The guy asked what curry we wanted when taking our order and we thought he meant the kuah(gravy), so we said chicken curry. When the food arrived with the big chunk of chicken drumstick, we were dumbfounded cz we wanted to order the beef curry separately lolol

Unsatisfied with our breakfast and craving for some good ol' kaya toasts with half-boiled eggs, we left for Toh Soon Cafe on Campbell Street. It's actually a lane in between shop lots with stalls...not your typical cafe though it's called a cafe.

It was only around 9am and it was already packed! Bummer! Coincidentally, we saw a church friend, Agnes and her friends there. We left after waiting around for a good 10 minutes or so cz we just couldn't wait anymore.

random shop next to the lane that sells our first ever makeup products- cold powder and the opera powder lolol

Since we had nothing better to do, we ventured to Gurney Paragon, Gurney Plaza and this yucky Coffee Tree coffee-tasting place. It was one hot day, which left us rather lethargic. The malls are very much like the malls in JB...rather boring, so we didn't shop. It happens when you're too used to the malls in KL :P Oh, we didn't go to Queensbay though, not sure if that's good.

can you see the beachhhhh?!

After the yucky coffee tasting we had, it was bus ride back to Chulia Street for more oyster omelets!! To be exact, the bus dropped us off at a stop that's right in front of our hotel! Is that awesome location or what? XD

This time, we kinda got a bit overboard and placed 2 orders of RM10 oyster omelets lolol We should have ordered one RM6 and one RM10, but I guess I was just too hungry to think straight at that moment hahaha

hurray for oyster omelets!!

Evening was meant for chilling and we had planned to spend it at ChinaHouse, a cafe famous for its variety of cakes. And I really mean variety. The choices of cakes laid on the huge wooden dinner table seemed never ending!

From the outside, it looks like a tiny little cafe, but the inside has sufficient seating as it's actually two shop lots connected. ChinaHouse has a subsection called The Canteen, which is a hipster bar with live music on Fridays-Sundays.

Speaking of the space, the front part of the cafe is rather cramp since it's an old colonial time kinda building after all and half of it is taken up by a bar. This made me rather uneasy the moment I stepped into the cafe cz within the first 5 seconds I heard at least 5 times of "Excuse me"...and me having to step aside.

It was sooo annoying, I'd compare it to a wet market if it wasn't dark and filled with cakes. Never has a place made me feel rather stressed just by entering, so that says a lot. And note that the staffs aren't the friendliest people you'll meet. Most of them are either arrogant, grumpy or annoyed. No idea what's their problem, but they sure didn't look like they want my business.

Also, just to add to their bad points, their staffs do not have a uniform. That made it really hard to identify them, not good. Gordon Ramsey would not approve. Ok, done with the ranting.

the menu

We decided on 2 slices of cakes and some tea. The cakes are expensive, and it's not all that great in my opinion. Yes, they have unique flavours that you can't find anywhere else...but it doesn't match the pricing when taking the texture of cake and customer service into account.

so English with our pot of Earl Grey tea lolol

Oopsy Daisy (RM15 per slice)

Oopsy Daisy is a peanut butter chocolate cake which tasted yummyyy! I loved the layer of peanut butter cream as it was very rich in flavour and basically you just can't go wrong with peanut butter lah. The cake, however was very dry. It's not that bad since the cream was moist enough..so it kinda evens out the dryness, if that makes sense.

Lemon Curd Layer Cake (RM15 per slice)

We both preferred this cake between the two slices cz it wasn't very dry and the lemony taste was good! Not too sour, not too sweet and very refreshing to the taste buds.

A cool concept they have at ChinaHouse is doodling! In the photo above, you can see paper cups hung on a string, right? Those are artwork of customers!

White paper cups are provided at every table, along with colourful crayons in a glass cup for use. Oh! The paper cups aren't the only thing for you to doodle on...the table "cloth" is actually a huge sheet of mahjong paper for you to doodle on too!

I'll give them points for being creative and bringing the artsy-fartsyness out of people. Michelle's the artsier one than me, so I let her have the honours of doodling on the paper cup! Her inspiration was our order- the cakes and the tea lol

ChinaHouse is worth the try as a first timer, but seriously for me, I don't think I'd pay them a second visit the next time I'm back in Penang. The cakes are pretty much high-priced mediocre homemade cakes to me. Love the variety, but individually, the quality ain't that great...and the customer service sucks so bad.

ChinaHouse was just a night "teatime" haha We made our way to the famous late night nasi kandar shop for fooood! On the way, we saw a one of the famous wall art. I was quite surprised when the local government or whoever it is that actually fixed a wall lamp for tourists to take photos when the day has gone dark! How thoughtful and considerate of them!

perfect lighting

On their last trip, Mic and Reb told me about a nasi kandar shop that opens at 10pm and they made a mistake by buying nasi kandar from the earlier stall. I was feeling quite bloated and didn't feel like I could eat anymore so I decided to give it a pass... but that, my friends...is my one regret of the trip hahaha

The super yummy nasi kandar is also known as Nasi Kandar BeraturBeratur in English is queue. Why beratur? Because customers literally make up a long queue while waiting for the legit nasi kandar shop to open...what I mean by legit is the really really hyped up one, not the one before it.

This restaurant really opens at 10pm, if not slightly later. So if you arrive before than 10pm and see people selling nasi kandar, that's not the one lolol

hungry monster deciding what to get

one with the signboard, yummy packed nasi kandar and happy nasi kandar man!

only photo taken of the food before vanishing into our stomachs

Unfortunately, the photo above is the only one taken before it went into our tummies. We just couldn't wait any longer lolol Quite disappointed cz this photo doesn't look very appetizing and it DOES NOT do the food justice at all!

The food was soooo good! Michelle got fried chicken and beef for only RM10. I was well surprised at the price cz although it was only two items, the portion is huge!

The super delicious fried chicken was big and so was the crazy good beef! The chicken was well deep fried into orangey golden colour and omg it wasn't crispy, but fried to perfection. The batter they use was sooo good! I suck at describing tastes, so I'll let Michelle describe it for you hahaha And the beef. They gave 2 big chunks and though I'm a beef lover, I cannot tolerate overcooked beef that makes it hard to chew. Their beef tore perfectly!! It was super easy separate and chew..omg the best!

I sooo regret not getting my own portion cz right after tasting it in our room(thanks to Michelle's generosity), my appetite came back hahaha

Despite being so damn lazy, Michelle dragged me out of bed for more food...random roti(s). Yes, at almost 11pm! Food hunt ain't a joke, y'all!

apparently famous like Petaling Jaya's SS2 Murni Discovery

Previously from Jalan Dato Koyah, KSB Cahaya (known by Penangites as Abu Mamak) has temporarily moved to Macalister Lane. I found it similar to Murni cz there are tonnes of youngsters patronizing at such late hours...andddd there's all kinds of roti!

rotirotirotirotiroti

me not knowing what to order

kaya toasts and half boiled eggs

Roti USA

Roti USA is toast with a sunny side up egg, sausage, some chili sauce and mayonnaise as toppings. The names of the rotis are makes me wonder if it actually represents each country/city its named after lolol But then...what would Roti Osama be? I shall leave it to your imagination to avoid sparking any negative feelings lolol

don't remember what roti this was

and some iced Milo :D

Abu Mamak is a nice place for supper, but it's not my favourite. The rotis are all quite similar with just a different topping or two...or instead of the roti canai's roti, they use bread.

Andddd that's it for day two! I'm excited to write about day three(also the last day) of the trip cz of a cafe! The cafe's yogurt, to be exact hehe Make a guess on which cafe I'm referring to XD
