Cold weather makes for a good mood Naomi! And so, I shall complete my Kuching series.
Last day was all for shopping! We arranged it that way to "prolong"" the freshness of the kek batik we were going to buy. Afternoon/evening time flights back is preferred cz can maximize the trip, take my own sweet time to do some last rounds of shopping before leaving for the airport.
But first, breakfast!
The breakfast set we got was acceptable, although not the best. However, the bun and toast we got were fresh and fluffy! It's a good thing the breads were good cz it's their namesake :P To go with breakfast, we had warm homemade soya bean, something I'd love to have right now in this cold weather.

Sunday, 5.45am-2pm
Since our shopping place was Main Bazaar street and across the river, we parked along the Kuching Waterfront. As it was a Monday, we had to purchase parking coupon, which took forever cz the very kind lady at the counter was helping us out with punching in the time and got a little confused lol
There's a number of boats that goes back and forth frequently, so the wait to cross the river isn't that long. Boat ride from the waterfront to the Astana was RM1 per person.
Nothing on this side, over to our next destination we go! Except, a jungle was between us which would require another boat ride. This time, a different boatman charged us RM2.50 each.
It was quite obvious he wants to overcharge us, knowing we're not locals la. But since it wasn't a lot, and we want to get to our kek batik.. we paid him anyway.
It was a rather quiet day which made the area seem a bit like a ghost town. Maybe because it was a weekday, people were either in school or at work. Glad we found Dayang Salhah Kek Lapis! They even have a signboard to help potential customers!
As we stepped in, we were giddy with excitement! So many choices of kek batik all around!!! Watermelon flavour, durian flavour, pure chocolate, prune (the best!), cheese, themed ones too! There wasn't any samples as they usually would, no clue why. So we bought based on bloggers' recommendation...and instincts XD
There were two prices- RM10 and RM25, which indicates what they're made with, butter and margarine respectively.
I personally loved India (margarine cake with Cadbury chocolate in between layers) and Prune (margarine cake with prune in between layers).
We bought over RM200 worth of kek lapis for family and friends muahahahaha That's how much we loved kek lapis as souvenirs :P
Their packaging was awesome and very travel-friendly. No need to worry about buying tonnes as souvenirs to bring back home!
There are boxes of different sizes to fit the kek lapis nicely. First, they'd arrange into suitable sized boxes, then place the sealed box into a plastic bag before sealing like crazy! Not to mention, they even paste a "Fragile" sticker on it and wrote customer's name and contact number. Super efficient and super neat! I like! hahaha

Across our lodge was Black Bean Coffee, where they have Sarawak coffee beans and imported ones too. I like how we always seem to stay next to a nice cafe. In Penang, we were a couple doors away to Mugshot Cafe! Dropped off our heavy baby of kek lapis in the room and had some nice coffee to relax.
Iced cafe latte (RM6); Sago milk tea (RM3.80)
My iced latte was perfect for a moment of chilling, nice strong coffee scent; albeit a little heavy-handed on the sugar. The sago in Mich's milk tea was the pearls. Initially I didn't get what 'sago' was, until the drink came haha

Surprisingly, postage stamps weren't readily available like in Krabi or Penang- in bookstores or travel agencies. Fortunately, the General Post Office was just around the corner!
Being very disappointed that I didn't get to fill up my postcards at Magenta Restaurant, we went to the Wrong Place before checking out. The cafe reminds me a bit of Roost, the old-school wooden look and unique furniture pieces.
I read good reviews about their food there, but didn't get to try any cz wasn't hungry yet. Next time, perhaps? :P
Tuak, anyone? :P
nope, just carrot juice hahaha

As Mich went to make one last round for souvenirs, I made my way to a very famous roadside stall! Ever since our first day, we were looking for it but it wasn't open. Thank God our sharp eyes spotted the auntie and uncle with their stall opened!!!!!!!!
The stall is situated on the right of Wayang Street Chinese Temple, in front of a vacant shop lot.
It opens around 1pm (no definite timing), selling fried chicken wings, chicken gizzards, chicken butt and fishballs.
As seen in the photo above, people of all ages queue up to buy fried goodness! Famous among the locals, I'm glad it's becoming known to tourists as well cz good things are meant to be shared! :P
The auntie who was in charge of frying, was rather quiet and focused on her job. She looks a bit intimidating...like one of those aunties who'd shout at you hahaha The uncle, on the other hand, was slightly friendlier in taking customer's orders.
Chicken wing (RM2.50), Fishballs (RM1)
*Don't quite remember the price, but it's around those prices listed above.
I was pretty lucky to get the fresh, piping hot batch! Soooo happy though I had to wait for around 10mins.
Airport snacks!!!
The fishballs weren't exceptionally delicious, but the chili sauce that came with it made it yuuuuummz! As for the chicken wings, those were BOMB! It tastes like pasar malam fried chicken, but a bit yummier :D Sooooo good!

That concludes my first ever trip to Kuching, Sarawak! Taking a break from food trips now to save money for trips to farther lands, and it's about time to shed some weight haha
Wargh, so bad la you! Now I want kopitiam kaya bread!
ReplyDeleteBtw, been wanting to ask you this for the longest time, what kind of camera do you use? I LOVE all of your pictures!
muahahaha US takde Chinese kopitiam ke?
DeleteI use mainly my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone camera. That one, if good lighting then nice la, otherwise, not so nice. But the Kuching photos, mostly used my sister's Canon Powershot G12 (can be very greyish at times). And thank youuuu! I love your illustrations!
This is very useful article for all. Kindly keep up the good work.
