Weekend calls for lots of sleep and hiao (jalan-jalan) time! Sucks that I'm already in my final year, yet my weekdays schedule is still packed as hell. On a slightly better note, Mich and I recently visited the the brand new Hello Kitty Gourmet Cafe for lunchea (lunch-tea)!
The first ever official Hello Kitty cafe in Malaysia is nestled in a corner of Sunway Pyramid (H&M exit)!
Go early if you wanna avoid the queue, as you know lots of females are fans of this particular cat and they all come out around tea time hahaha Note that this cafe is more tea time appropriate than lunch.
The cafe comes in two floors- ground floor (regular menu) and first floor (tea time set menu). We only wanted to try out their desserts, so we chose the ground floor. As most people would choose to dine downstairs, there's usually ample space upstairs and lesser seats on the former although it's quite spacious.
Interior is filled with mostly pink pastel and white colours, Hello Kitty bows, portraits and such..like you're in Hello Kitty dreamy world!
It's a given that themed cafes' food and beverages are usually mediocre paired with a heavy price tag. So bear that in mind, as we did too. The tea time set menu comes up to over RM130++, mind you! Since I'm not a huge fan, not spending that much on tea time haha
Note: Waiter only takes orders for drinks.
They have a weird system there which requires you to place your desserts order at the counter. I mean, it's the same way at Secret Recipe, but if it's already listed on the menu, why can't we just place our order at our seats?
A macaron, a slice of cake and a latte was what we decided on. However, apparently macaron is tea time menu only although it's also stated on the downstairs menu. Inconsistency and inflexibility, much?
Mich pointed it out to the person handling the dessert counter, but decided on a Chocolate Salted Caramel Cupcake in place of the macaron anyway. The guy got it wrong and gave us Chocolate Salted Caramel Cake instead (a slice of cake is twice the price of a cupcake, okay?!). We didn't wanna make a fuss and just took it.
Then the regular-tasting latte, RM14.30 came. Expectation of a cute Hello Kitty latte art was ruined when it came with a disfigured one instead. No quality control at all! To think that we're paying for the theme, not so much the taste, yet they have the cheek to give us such low quality art.
Salted Caramel Chocolate Cake, RM21.50
The Salted Caramel Chocolate Cake was quite dense and dry, and cream was a bit frozen. Not too bad taste-wise, but they could be slightly more generous with the salted caramel drizzle.
Morello Cherry Ricotta Cheesecake, RM20.30
The Morello Cherry Ricotta Cheesecake tasted more like lemon cheesecake. Again, taste-wise not too bad, but the texture is bad bad bad. It felt like I'm having half cake, half jelly in my mouth- a weird texture. Cherry flavour was barely tasted as well, especially cz the top layer was so bland.
Warning: Check your cute Hello Kitty serviette before using!
I had a bad experience when wanting to clean my mouth with the serviette. As I lift it up to wiped my mouth, I noticed stains on it! HORRIBLE!
Mich and I came to a conclusion that if it doesn't look used, they'd just assume the previous customer didn't use it, hence, no need to change. What kind of logic is that especially for a F&B or even any kind of service business?!
Think hotels. If the customer who checked-in is super OCD and is super duper neat, used the sheets (obviously), but assemble it exactly as how it is when he arrived as he checks out. Does that mean you don't have to change the sheets? No, right?! Ewww...
All in all, I wasn't entirely pleased with my visit. The expensive-but-not-yummy desserts were slightly more acceptable than the failed latte art and stained serviette. I mean, after all you're paying for the theme than the taste. Which is why the latte art which didn't turn out well was NOT acceptable...and the serviette, just gross.
Read Mich's version of our visit! It isn't less brutal than my review :P
